CENTRE LE CORBUSIER

Centre Le Corbusier / Heidi Weber Pavilion
Hoeschgasse 8
Zurich
Le Corbusier 1965
Also known as the Centre Le Corbusier, the Heidi Weber Pavilion was completed after Corbusier's death and is now a (rarely open) museum and gallery.
The structure of the building is in two parts: first, two cubes, with sides of enameled steel panels and glass; above them, but structurally separate, a massive gray steel umbrella or parasol.
The modular construction of the cubes has proven sufficiently flexible to accommodate various uses, from the house that the building was originally designed as, to the gallery it now is and was always envisaged as becoming. Within the space available beneath the umbrella roof, the inner building can take on different configurations.

ALEXANDER GIRARD

Alexander Girard became Herman Miller's director of design for its textile division in 1952, a time when fabrics were purely functional and no fun at all--dull, drab, without pattern. "People got fainting fits if they saw bright, pure color," Girard said.
But he felt that color was just what fabrics needed, and Herman Miller gave him the freedom to express himself. With primary colors, concise geometric patterns, and a touch of humor, he injected joy and spontaneity into fabrics, making them a vibrant part of homes and offices. His designs perfectly complemented the progressive Herman Miller furniture designed by his friends, Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson.
Girard's work with Herman Miller continued into the 1970s, when he spiced up the Action Office system with a series of decorative panel fabrics.
Girard's risky, sometimes iconoclastic fabrics were inspired not by a vision of the future but by a love of traditional folk art. Avid collectors, he and his wife, Susan, surrounded themselves with pieces from over 100 countries. These colorful, whimsical objects inspired him and provided a framework for his designs.
The Girards' collection was so large--over 100,000 pieces--that in 1962, they established the Girard Foundation in Sante Fe to manage it. In 1978, the Girard Foundation donated the objects to the Sante Fe Museum of International Folk Art, where they remain the core of the world's most important collection of cross-cultural folk art.

REMEMBER? : SERVICE MERCHADISE
REMEMBER GATHERIN' THE FAMILY AND HEADING OVER TO SERVICE MERCHANDISE, THE OVERSIZED SECURITY-LADEN MEGA WHOLESALE MART OF THE FUTURE? REMEMBER HOW COOL OF AN IDEA YOU THOUGHT IT WAS TO COMBINE AN ELECTRONICS STORE, A SPORTING GOODS STORE, AND A JEWLERY MART? YOU COULD LEAVE THE KIDS WITH THE TOYS, CHECK OUT THE LATEST SHOTGUN, ALL WHILE YOUR WIFE DROOLED OVER A TENNIS BRACELET. WELL, UNTIL RECENTLY I THOUGHT THIS PASTIME HAD PASSED BUT SERVICE MERCHANDISE HAS REVIVED ITSELF (HALF-HEARTEDLY)

WHO KNEW?

Service Merchandise is a defunct chain of catalog showroom stores carrying fine jewelry, toys, sporting goods, and electronics that existed from 1934 to 2002. The company's former chairman, Raymond Zimmerman, resurrected Service Merchandise as an Internet-only retailer in 2004 after buying the name and logo at auction, and later forwarded the website to another online store in 2007. The site returned in 2008.

ARMY SUICIDES

Last month, Army suicides outnumbered combat deaths in both Iraq and Afghanistan, continuing a steady rise in the number of Army suicides over the last 5 years.
This trend seems to be caused by the stress of repeated combat deployments, the trauma of returning from a combat zone, the bureaucratic obstacles at Veteran Affairs, the overuse of anti-depressants, and, just maybe, the immorality and incoherence of the wars.

REMEMBER? : RIVAL SCHOOLS

Rival Schools: United By Fate, released in Japan as Shiritsu Justice Gakuen: Legion of Heroes (私立ジャスティス学園 LEGION OF HEROES), and shortened to Rival Schools for the PlayStation version, is a fighting game produced by Capcom. The game was initially released in arcades and later ported to the PlayStation.
The structure of the single player game of Rival Schools varied depending on how characters were selected. If two characters from the same school were selected (with a few exceptions), single-player would play in a progressing story with fights predetermined beforehand and each fight preceding and ending with short 2D cut-scenes to explain the story. If two characters from different schools were chosen, the single-player mode would instead play similar to other fighting games, with the player's chosen team fighting against random teams of opponents before facing the boss. In the arcade, character selection was initially limited to selecting two characters from the same school and free selection of any character was accessed through time; the PlayStation versions, which included all characters unlocked by default, had no such restrictions.
The story introduces the player to a Japanese city called Aoharu City, where several local schools are the victims of unknown attacks and kidnappings of students and staff. The various characters in the game set out to find who is responsible for the attacks on their school, with the cut-scenes and fights portraying their interactions with the other schools and among themselves. Eventually, the story reveals that an elite school in the city, Justice High, is responsible for the attacks. The player's team eventually faces off against Raizo Imawano, the principal of the school, and first boss of the game. If certain requirements are met during the fight against Raizo, the story continues and the players play a last fight against Hyo Imawano, Raizo's nephew and the true mastermind behind the events of the game.

Bun B has announced plans to release the final Underground Kingz (UGK) album, For Life, in honor of his deceased partner Pimp C.
The album is reportedly being released March 31st via Jive Records.
“This will be a good bookend to the legacy of myself and Pimp,” Bun said. “And definitely take not just the group, but Pimp C, to true legend and iconic status. This album is not about who I wanna work with and what kind of beats I wanna do — this album is about what the people wanna hear, and that’s Bun and Pimp. And I wanna try to give that to them in the most purest sense.” (MTV)
